The BC ruling, after grinding through the courts for a decade, is but a reminder that Canada's sick health care system will not be cured by its dysfunctional legal system. To expect our system to be saved by the courts amounts to, at best, magical thinking, while more and more Canadians who suffer in silence and risk dying from inability to access essential care will "just have to wait".

BC Covid19 Math and Stats modelling lecture May 14, 2020

The "bcCOVID-19 group Lecture: Real time modelling of the COVID-19 epidemic - perspectives from British Columbia" was delivered as a Zoom lecture and was recorded. The first speaker Caroline Colijn provides an interesting explanation of the use of mathematical modelling and how this is being used to develop data driven policies. Her presentation includes some graphs that are quite useful.
BC Covid-19 Survey gets quite personal

The BC Covid-19 Survey has just been launched and people can participate until the end of May 2020.
The survey takes longer than the 10-15 minutes claimed and while the survey does allow people to answer anonymously and answer only the questions they wish to, it does include a number of questions that reveal a lot of private personal information including the individual's PHN if they wish.

As a FP and ER doctor since 1986, I've been involved of late with a software company that developed Verified Medical, a secure document storage and collaboration platform. With the arrival of COVID-19 we realized that there was a need for a free, secure video consultation platform that meets the needs of healthcare professionals for tele-working with PHIPA, PIPEDA and HIPAA compliance.
We recently opened the platform to the profession through drCalls.me and are seeking input from colleagues on how best to develop the platform functionality further.
Update on CPSBC Bylaw Amendments - Associate Physician

We wish to express our sincere thanks to the more than 600 BC physicians who signed the group response letter in less than 48 hours. The overwhelming response with more than 150 comments expressed strong concerns about the precedent-setting CPSBC Bylaw amendments and the potential detrimental effect on patient safety and the quality of care delivered in BC. In light of the worrisome and precedent-setting amendments to physician licensure (Section 2-24 and Schedule A) proposed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and BC Ministry of Health, please find an informative response letter attached below. The letter was jointly created by BC physicians to voice our concerns and we urge you to share it with other BC physicians. We have but a very limited window of opportunity to make our concerns known as the April 15 deadine for input is imminent.

Acupressure Eye Exercises Chinese School Children

This is a poster used in chinese schools for students to do acupressure eye exercises. It was received by a Canadian in the early days of the opening of relations between Canada and China who later gave it to me and we posted it in our office. It might be of interest to others.
Book Review: The Last Plane by Robert Hirzer

This is a good book, a well written novel. It is the first book by the author, Robert Hirzer, a physician and GP whose practice was in the area served by the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, BC - the hospital where he interned and where he was on staff in the days when doctors not only worked in their offices but also cared for patients in hospital.
The novel, while it is a work of fiction, is a reflection following the death of his father on the lives of his family spanning four generations including his grandparents, his parents, his own generation with brief mention of his children. In one short chapter he describes a day in the life of a GP that rings true for many who practiced in days when full spectrum general practice was the norm. But, most of the novel is about the lives of his parents through their childhood in Austria into youth and young adulthood as the second world war consumed those years.
