Herald headlines: 76 years ago, Stampeders won their first Grey Cup
A strange court case in Calgary 101 years started when several taxi drivers were charged with illegally selling liquor. A number of plainclothes police officers had investigated the matter by calling for a taxi and then successfully asking if the drivers could obtain liquor and selling it to them. When the case went to court, counsel for the prosecution asked the police chief — who was testifying — if he could say for sure if the bottle that was delivered in one case was "intoxicating." The chief said he believed it was, based on what arresting officers had told him. Counsel then suggested the chief should taste the liquid in question, but the Magistrate overseeing the case said it wasn't necessary. "I don't want to have the spectacle here of having the chief of police in the witness box taking a drink of whisky out of a bottle. I don't like it all," Magistrate Sanders said. Read More

As announced by the PM, Canadians are to receive a break in the GST for a couple of months and maybe a cash gift. It appears that the PM does not understand that the promoted savings amount to an insignificant gesture. Along with the cash, it is an attempt to buy votes in case there is an early election. Stuart Culbertson: We have reached a 'What now? What next?' moment in Canadian trade
In January 2017, the U.S. inaugurated a new president who had campaigned on ripping up Canada’s most important economic arrangement: the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). A few weeks later, I surveyed Canda’s trade prospects in an op-ed in this paper, “Time for a third option in Canada’s trade strategy.” I argued that then-president Donald Trump’s overt “America first” protectionism signalled it was time to get serious about diversifying our trade relations to protect the Canadian economy from emerging risks in the U.S. Read More
